Wizards C Haywood leaves with sprained right ankle 2009-10-10

Wizards C Haywood leaves with sprained right ankle 2009-10-10WASHINGTON (AP) - Starting center Brendan Haywood sprained his right ankle in the first quarter of Washington's 123-115 exhibition loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night and is expected to miss the Wizards' next game.

Haywood limped out of the locker room and declined to talk to reporters.

He tumbled to the court and clutched his right ankle after being fouled by Drew Gooden about 2 1/2 minutes into the game.

Haywood was helped up by teammates and stayed in the game, playing for another 5 1/2 minutes. Once he left, he did not return, and he left the sideline area during the second quarter.

He had four points and five rebounds and missed all six of his free throw attempts.

If this had been a meaningful game, Haywood "probably could have come back," coach Flip Saunders said.

Asked if Haywood would play Sunday at Toronto, Saunders answered: "I would say that probably not. We're not going to chance it."

Haywood missed all but six games of last season after having right wrist surgery, and the Wizards clearly missed his presence, particularly at the defensive end.

"He protects the basket," Saunders said.
