Washington Wizards Roster Report 2008-06-30
DRAFT PICK:

JaVale McGee, C, 7-0, Nevada -- Athletic big man can guard the rim. He is a big leaper and has been described by most observers as an explosive player.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: While Antawn Jamison is generally referred to as the third-best player on the team, there is no question that he was the best player on the team night in and night out. While Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler combined to appear in just 71 games, Jamison started all but three. He also averaged team highs in points (21.4) and rebounds (10.20).

MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER: While he can't be blamed for the knee injury that limited him to just 13 games, gigantic things were expected of Gilbert Arenas. Instead, he went into the offseason still recognized as a great talent and a seat-filler who still has yet to exhibit leadership qualities.

BIGGEST NEEDS: With Antonio Daniels losing a step, the Wizards might be in the market for a point guard. Most of those minutes next season will go to Gilbert Arenas, assuming he stays in Washington, and that would make Daniels, who is making $5 million, expendable.

FREE AGENT FOCUS: Look for the Wizards to be the epicenter of many NBA rumors this summer. Arenas has promised over and over that he will opt out of his contract. Sources close to the player have said that he intends to opt out and re-sign with the Wizards.

The other big name in free agency is unrestricted forward Antawn Jamison. Jamison will turn 32 next season, but last year he played like a youngster. Players who put up the type of numbers that Jamison did usually command about $12 million, often more. Last season Jamison made $16 million, and he's probably not going to want to be too far out of that neighborhood.

The Wizards will probably lose guard Roger Mason to free agency after the backup guard's solid season.

PLAYER NOTES:

--F Andray Blatche was arrested for the third time in early June, this time in south-central Virginia on charges of reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.

--F Caron Butler was spotted working out at Verizon Center recently.

--G Antonio Daniels might have to have offseason surgery on his injured left wrist. Daniels, who is right-handed, injured himself in the team's playoff loss to the Cavs.
