Washington Wizards Roster Report 2009-06-08

Washington Wizards Roster Report 2009-06-08
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Antawn Jamison played in every game except the season finale against Boston. He led the team in scoring (22.2) and rebounding (8.9), and he led the Wizards with 38 double-doubles.

MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER: Forward Oleksiy Pecherov was selected in the first round by the Wizards. Since then he has yet to break into the team's rotation. Even with centers Brendan Haywood and Etan Thomas missing most of the season, Pecherov remained behind Veteran Darius Songaila and youngsters Andray Blatche, JaVale McGee and Dominic McGuire in the playing rotation.

FREE AGENT FOCUS: Unlike last season when both Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison were free agents, the Wizards won't have much housekeeping in terms of free agents. They will probably let G Juan Dixon, who was used infrequently on a bad team, walk. A bigger problem for the team is that it is pushing up against the luxury tax. This being the case, don't look for the Wizards to do very much of note during free agency.

--G Stephon Marbury could join Wizards coach Flip Saunders in Washington, the New York Daily News reported. A source said Saunders would strongly consider signing Marbury, who finished the season in Boston last year. Saunders was Marbury's first NBA coach. However, the Wizards already have G Mike James and G Javaris Crittenton on their roster.

--It's no secret that the Phoenix Suns want to avoid paying the luxury tax, which fueled rumors that they might attempt to try F Amar'e Stoudemire. A rumor surfaced last week that the Suns might deal Stoudemire to the Wizards for F Antawn Jamison, the expiring contract of G Mike James and the No. 5 pick.

"I love D.C., quote, end quote," Stoudemire said on a radio station this week.

--G Gilbert Arenas is well known for his hard-hitting blog. Now, C Brendan Haywood is following in his footsteps. He admitted in his blog that Cavaliers F LeBron James' actions after Game 6 in the Eastern Conference final bothered him greatly. "It was when LeBron James chose not to do interviews or shake the hands of the Orlando Magic players who eliminated his team from the playoffs and ended his championship run," he wrote. "LeBron is a great player, the face of the league and played great in the playoffs. ... It's because he's a great player and the face of the league that I'm even more disappointed by his actions. I think he made a mistake by not shaking hands or doing interviews. He has to learn to be a better sportsman than that because of what he represents -- not just our league but athletes in general. He made a poor choice. When you're the face of the league, there's a responsibility that goes along with it." James was fined $25,000 for his actions.

--C Etan Thomas attended the 2009 White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington last month. Thomas' passion for politics led him to work on the President Barack Obama's campaign and have a role on the Democratic National Committee. "All the political people were there, so it was a time when President Obama talks to all the people who cover him," Thomas said. "It was a great evening. President Obama was funny. I didn't really know what to expect, but he was funny and was really on a roll. Michelle Obama presented scholarship awards and it was really just a great evening."

--F Antawn Jamison underwent surgery to remove a bone spur from his right ankle.

--C Brendan Haywood's wrist, which cost him most of the regular season, is fully healed.

--G Mike James is recovering from a fractured pinky that is not expected to be a problem when the team begins training camp next fall.
