Washington Wizards Notes, Quotes 2008-11-25

Washington Wizards Notes, Quotes 2008-11-25
--Crippled by Gilbert Arenas' absence, the Wizards knew they'd have a rough go of things to start the season. A 1-10 record, however, was too rough for head coach Eddie Jordan to keep his job.

On Monday, Jordan was fired and replaced by director of player development Ed Tapscott, who will serve as the Wizards' interim coach for the rest of the season.

The news came as a shock to the Wizards' players.

"I don't think any of the players saw it coming," said Brendan Haywood.

Forward Antawn Jamison was visibly upset at the news, saying, "Why wouldn't I be shocked? The team is 1-10, not the coach. Next question."

--The last time the franchise was this bad at the start of the season was back in 1966, when the Baltimore Bullets began the season 1-10.

--One clear reason why Andray Blatche hasn't stepped in and made a difference for the Wizards this season is that he bulked up over the summer. However, that bulk did not come from hitting the weight room but rather from eating too many late-night meals. Sources say that coaches recognized Blatche was out of shape from the moment they saw him at training camp.

--G Antonio Daniels, who had been starting at point guard in place of Gilbert Arenas, had missed five of the last six games with a sore right knee before returning Friday against Houston. He was held scoreless in just under 19 minutes. Daniels didn't play Saturday.

--If the Wizards have a home-court advantage at Verizon Center, it needs to start playing a role in the outcome of some upcoming games. The Wizards will play four of their next five games at home, beginning with a Tuesday game vs. Golden State.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We still have confidence that we can go out and win a game." -- Coach Eddie Jordan, following the team's latest loss at New York on Saturday. Jordan was fired on Monday after a 1-10 start.
