Washington Wizards Getting Inside 2009-07-14

The Wizards find themselves in the unusual position this summer of already exceeding the luxury tax, the system -- which owner Abe Pollin helped design -- in which teams pay a dollar-for-dollar tax for every cent they exceed the salary cap.

This still will not preclude the Wizards, who already have almost $76 million committed to salaries, from trying to add a big journeyman-type to the roster before the start of the 2009-10 season.

"We've made some good moves during the offseason, but the one thing that we certainly are aware of is that we don't have enough quality bigs on the roster," a team source said. "We're going to have to do something for sure."

The Wizards have focused their interest on three big men in particular, gauging the interest of Jamal Magloire, Rasho Nesterovic and Fabricio Oberto. They are in no big rush, so look for them to make a move on one of these guys or someone else of that ilk later this summer.

The Wizards will get someone to bite on either the mid-level exception ($5.85 million) or the biannual exception. With their history, look for them to almost certainly offer the much cheaper biannual exception (just under $2 million).

"In these uncertain economic times, you really have to be careful with how you spend," the team source said. "It's just a fact of life now. The bad economy is pinching everyone in all walks of life. The NBA is no different. We are feeling the pinch, too."
