Washington Wizards Getting Inside 2009-09-04

Washington Wizards Getting Inside 2009-09-04Perhaps no team in the league that failed to reach the playoffs has as much as stake as the Wizards.

This is not so much because the Wizards were expected by most to reach the playoffs last season, but more so because the Wizards have stayed committed to the nucleus of Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison with little to show for it.

Since Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld tied his horse to the trio back in 2005, they have started in just 115 of a possible 328 games. Together they have won almost 60 percent of those games, not a bad clip at all. But the problem is that the team is running out of time.

"This is a business and because of that you can't continue to stay in that wishful-thinking mode," said one Eastern Conference scout, speaking anonymously. "Those guys could be damn good together; we already know that. But at what point do you look at them and say, 'It might never happen'? They are at that point right now."

"It's an important year for us, no question," Jamison said earlier this summer. "This is the NBA. Nobody is going to have any pity on you. With that said, it's time for us to make a move in the division. The time for us is now."
