Washington Wizards Getting Inside 2009-02-05

Washington Wizards Getting Inside 2009-02-05
Wizards interim coach Ed Tapscott has steered clear of knocking the efforts of the team mostly because on most nights, Tapscott has felt that the effort has been there.

Until recently.

For Tapscott, the provocation for breaking his silence about his team's efforts came when losing at home to a team that had lost 12 straight games and was starting three rookies. That is exactly what the Wizards did on Monday when Memphis routed them 113-97.

The "worst effort" since he took over the team on Nov. 23 is how Tapscott put it. As a result, when the Wizards went back to work on Tuesday to prepare for Wednesday night's game with New Jersey, the normally mild-mannered Tapscott put the Wizards through one of their most strenuous practices of the season.

"This is what we need to do," team captain Antawn Jamison said. "Doesn't matter if you have one of the best records or one of the worst records in the league. We're professionals and there is no need to take shortcuts. Coach Tapscott is doing a great job of instilling that is us. It's a lesson the older guys like myself should understand already, and the younger guys have to get it this season. No matter how bad it looks, you can't take shortcuts."

NETS 115, WIZARDS 88: The hard practice the Wizards went through after being embarrassed by Memphis on Monday looked to be wasted coaching as New Jersey destroyed the Wizards on Wednesday night. The 35 points the Nets scored in the third quarter was equal to the Wizards' entire second-half point total, and New Jersey shot better than 61 percent from the field.
