Washington Wizards Getting Inside 2008-11-21

Washington Wizards Getting Inside 2008-11-21
It was not a secret that Washington Wizards coach Eddie Jordan had been toying with the idea of injecting some youth into the lineup, and on Wednesday in Atlanta he did just that. Jordan pulled Etan Thomas out of the starting lineup at center and replaced him with rookie JaVale McGee. He also made a change at point guard, inserting Dee Brown as the starter and moving Juan Dixon to the bench.

"I think JaVale is going to give us some athleticism at the rim," Jordan said. "Etan, he's suited in his own way to come off the bench and give us some force with the way he plays. He has filled that role for years."

While Brown will no doubt be returning to the bench in the near future as players such as Antonio Daniels and Gilbert Arenas get healthy, the same is not true in the case of McGee. The seven-footer has been raising eyebrows in the organization with his superior athleticism and his length. It has been years, in fact, since the Wizards had a big man with the tools McGee brings to the table.

"I'm just happy for the opportunity to start," McGee said. "Now I've got to continue to make a contribution, grow and get better as a player."

McGee might catch somewhat of a break on Friday when the Wizards return to Verizon Center to face Houston. That's because Rockets center Yao Ming might not be able to go. Yao didn't play on Wednesday against Dallas because of a sore left foot.

HAWKS 91, WIZARDS 87: The Wizards looked as if they might notch their second win of the season with a victory at Atlanta. However, a three-pointer by Atlanta's Marvin Williams with 27 seconds left gave the Hawks the lead for good.
