News » ROCKETS SUMMARY 2009-05-06

No hard feelings

Heading into a playoff series against the team that drafted him, Rockets guard Von Wafer had no complaints about his time with the Lakers and even expressed fondness for the first team that waived him.

"I don't think about them cutting me," Wafer said. "They gave me my first shot. I love that organization. I love everybody, Mr. (Jerry) Buss, everybody. They gave me my chance. Kobe (Bryant) is my guy. He's my favorite player. I look up to him. ...

"He told me he was proud of me. That's big coming from a guy you look up to. It doesn't get any bigger than that."

Landry to the rescue?

While the Rockets face the rest of the postseason without Dikembe Mutombo, Lakers coach Phil Jackson said he was ready to use all three of his 7-footers - Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and DJ Mbenga - to defend Yao Ming.

As with the series against Portland, forward Carl Landry said the Rockets would have to counter with quickness, especially off the bench when Yao is out of the game.

"I have to be aggressive attacking the hoop and trying to sprint back on defense," Landry said. "They have quick guards, and we have a small but quick and feisty team. We have to use that to our advantage."

Landry struggled offensively through much of the first-round series, but he had his best game defensively and on the boards in Game 6.

"It kind of gives me confidence to have a good Game 6 coming into this series," Landry said. "I just have to keep playing well, do my best on the defensive end and communicate in transition."

A ?Von Hawk' for Artest

As promised, Rockets guard Ron Artest had his hair trimmed to a Von Wafer mohawk - with a twist.

In addition to the rise of hair down the middle, he had the Rockets' logo cut into the remaining hair on the side.

"I just got a little mohawk, a little Von Hawk with a little splash of Rockets ," Artest said. "I thought it would be fun. When I first was traded, I put the Rockets' logo on it. Everybody liked it, so I did it again. I kept my word with Von. I didn't renege."

Artest had told Wafer he would get the mohawk if the Rockets won a first-round series.

"Now we can trust him," Wafer said. "He can play."

?It was good for us'

By finishing their first-round series in six games, the Rockets moved to the second round with a day off and two practice days, a schedule considered more typical of an NBA season than the long layoff since the Lakers' first round and the quick turnaround of the Eastern Conference Game 1 on Monday.

"It was good for us," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said of the scheduling. ?It's a long ways from Portland to Houston. ... It was good to have one day off and then just get ready."
